There's nothing worse than having unexpected guests showing up to your barbecue, especially when the unwanted guests are pests like mosquitoes, flies, and bees. We don't want these little guys in our backyard any more than you do, so we compiled these tips to help you learn how to keep bugs out of your yard. So before they can set up camp in your yard for the year, let's get started:
How to Keep Mosquitoes out of Your Yard
Not only do mosquito bites leave you with an irritating itch, there's also a chance they can leave you with a deadly virus. If you want to stay itch- and virus-free this summer, treat your yard with a mosquito repellent. You can buy gallon jugs of mosquito and insect repellent at most home improvement stores; just spray the repellent on your lawn, bushes, and other landscaped areas and you'll create a barrier mosquitoes will know better than to enter. These repellents are usually made with oils and are able to keep mosquitoes away without releasing foul smelling fumes or chemicals. This method is effective for about 3 weeks and you can even have your yard treated professionally.
For a simpler fix, try citronella burning coils; these work because they mask your scent, but they are less effective as the smell dissipates through the air or is blown away with wind.
How to Keep Flies out of Your Yard
Flies won't do you much harm, but they certainly are annoying. Since flies seem to be attracted to all of the smells we as humans find completely unattractive, be sure you rid your yard of flies' favorite things (trash, dog poo, stagnant water, etc.). Also, be sure to cut your lawn often and even try planting fly repelling plants like basil, lavender, and mint (because flies are also NOT attracted to all the smells that we love).
How to Keep Carpenter Bees out of Your Yard
While honey bees act as an assistant gardener as they fly around and help pollinate the plants in your yard, carpenter bees do more harm than help. If you have a wooden deck or pergola, carpenter bees can absolutely destroy these structures leaving nothing but sawdust in their path. To keep the bees from setting up shop in your outdoor sanctuary, try trapping them in carpenter bee traps! Just hang the traps in the sunlight and you can be bee free in no time!
How to Keep Wasps out of Your Yard
Don't risk a nasty sting while you're enjoying some fresh air in the great outdoors. The first way you can keep wasps (as well as hornets and yellow jackets) away from your yard is to dispose of food trash — especially if you were enjoying any sweet treats — as soon as possible. Also, and this one requires a little more work on your part, check your home and outdoor structures for holes, cracks, or crevasses that these bugs would see as a new, rent-free home to call their own and have these repaired immediately.
